Find the funding first. Choose the university second.

Most applicants pick a university and then hope for a scholarship. The candidates who get funded do it the other way round: they identify an award they are actually eligible for, then apply to a host university that can deliver it.

Three questions that decide whether you get funded

Answer these before you research universities. Getting them wrong is what produces the applications that never had a chance.

①

Which route fits you?

Type A through your embassy if you have no fixed university. Type B directly to a host university if you do. The same applicant can be competitive in one and not the other.

②

Are you inside the hard limits?

Age 25 / 35 / 40. HSK 4–5 or an English certificate. Not already enrolled at the same level in China. These are filters, not preferences.

③

Does the stipend survive the city?

2,500 CNY goes far in Harbin and barely covers a dorm and canteen in Shanghai. The city choice is a funding decision, not just a lifestyle one.

Ladder

Six tiers of funding, easiest to hardest

Most applicants only consider the top two. The middle tiers are where a realistic file gets funded.

Reality check

Does a master's stipend cover the city?

Stipend of 3,000 CNY per month against the realistic monthly total on the campus-life page. Bachelor's awards pay 2,500 and PhD 3,500.

Timeline

The cycle, in the order it actually happens

Sep–Oct

Identify the route. For research degrees, email two or three potential supervisors now — this single step changes your odds more than anything else.

Nov

Assemble documents: notarised diploma and transcripts, two signed references, study plan, physical examination form.

Dec–Jan

CSC portals open. Type B university portals often close earlier than the national deadline.

Feb–Mar

Main submission window. Provincial calls appear and are usually announced with only a few weeks' notice.

Apr–Jun

Shortlists and interviews. Some universities ask for a video interview or a written test.

Jul–Sep

Results, JW201 form, visa, registration. Stipends normally start after university registration, not on arrival.

A realistic expectation. A full CSC award is competitive, and most applicants who receive one either had a supervisor advocating for them, applied through a route with a genuine country or university quota, or had a study plan that clearly matched a specific programme. A well-written generic application rarely succeeds.
FAQ

Funding questions, answered

Start with the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) through the route that matches your situation: Type A through your embassy if you have no fixed university, Type B directly to a host university if you do. Then layer a provincial scheme and a university merit award on top — they are not mutually exclusive at the application stage, though you can only hold one at a time.
Tuition and registration, on-campus accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance, and a monthly stipend of 2,500 CNY for bachelor's, 3,000 CNY for master's and 3,500 CNY for PhD students. International airfare is normally not included, and single rooms often require a supplement.
It covers the basics in most cities. In Harbin, Shenyang or Xi'an, 2,500–3,000 CNY covers a dorm place, food and transport comfortably. In Beijing or Shanghai it is tight: a dorm room and meals will absorb most of it, and you should budget 500–1,500 CNY extra per month from savings or approved part-time work.
No. Chinese government and most provincial schemes explicitly prohibit holding another scholarship concurrently. You can, however, be considered for several and choose the best offer.
No. The scholarship decision and the admission decision are separate, even when they are submitted together. Type B routes usually bundle them, but a scholarship committee can decline a candidate the university has accepted, and vice versa.
