Accommodation

Four options, in order of cost

🏠

On-campus shared dorm

600–1,800 CNY per month. The default for scholarship holders and first-year students; usually includes utilities and campus wifi.

On-campus single room

1,200–3,000 CNY per month. Limited supply; scholarship holders often pay a supplement for a single.

Off-campus apartment

1,000–5,500 CNY per month depending on city. Requires a lease, a deposit and registration with the local police station.

Shared flat with other students

The cheapest off-campus route in expensive cities, typically 30–50% below a studio. Agree on utilities and deposit in writing.

Practicalities

The costs nobody warns you about

Calendar

Your first month, in order

Day 1–3

Register at the university, collect your dorm key and student card, and complete the police accommodation registration within 24 hours.

Day 3–10

Apply for the residence permit if you hold an X1 visa. Book the appointment early — slots fill during registration week.

Week 1–2

Get a local SIM and a bank account. Both need your passport and student ID; the bank usually wants a university letter as well.

Week 2–3

Attend orientation, open a campus wifi account, and register with the campus clinic or insurance scheme.

Week 3–4

Settle the practical layer: payment apps, transport card, canteen card, and a language partner if you want one.

Budget for the first month separately. Deposits, the residence permit fee, a SIM card, bedding and a bank minimum can add 4,000–8,000 CNY on top of normal living costs. Scholarship stipends usually start after registration, not on arrival.

Is the stipend enough?

A CSC stipend of 2,500–3,500 CNY per month covers a dorm place and food comfortably in Harbin, Shenyang, Xi'an, Changsha or Chongqing. In Beijing and Shanghai it covers the dorm and canteen food but leaves little for travel, clothing or medical costs outside insurance. The practical rule most scholarship holders use is to keep a reserve of three to six months of living costs for the first year.
